HOW TO GET RID OF ACNE?

What is Acne?

Acne vulgaris (or cystic acne) is a skin disease,, which results in areas of skin with seborrhea (scaly red skin), papules (pinheads), pustules (pimples), comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), nodules (large papules) and possibly acne scarring.

Acne is mostly seenin the skin with the densest population of sebaceous follicles: The face, the upper part of the chest and the back. Severe acne is inflammatory.

Acne is most common in adolescence, but often continues into adulthood. In young people, acne is usually caused by an increase in testosterone.
For most people, acne diminishes over time and tends to disappear after the early twenties, but some individuals will carry the acne condition well into their thirties or even fifties.
Some of the large nodules were previously called “cysts”.
The “cysts” that accompany cystic acne, can appear on the buttocks, groin, and armpit area. This is where sweat collects in hair follicles. Cystic acne affects deeper skin tissue than does common acne. Body acne can be a problem, that usually indicates a more severe form of acne than the more common acne vulgaris.

Aside from scarring, Acne Vulgaris main effects are psychological, such as reduced self-esteem etc.

Symptoms of Acne Vulgaris:

What are the symptoms of acne vulgaris? Do you pften have red inflammation, large pores, whiteheads, “pimples / zits”? Then most likely, you have acne vulgaris. Acne vulgaris at its worse causes scarring but it is never lihe-threatening. Acne outbreaks often result from periods of intense stress, a  sub-par diet and hormone changes.

Causes of Acne Vulgaris:

Why do you get acne?. The causes of acne vulgaris are these four major causes: Hormones, diet, hygiene and genes. Nothing can be done  about your genes But the other three factors are treatable.

Acne vulgaris outbreaks happen, when pores are plugged and become inflamed. Sebum and dead skin cells, in connection with keratin, are the cause of the blockage.
Sebum is a material produced by the body. When the body produces sebum in excess, the sebum binds the dead cells within a skin pore. This results in acne.
Bacteria called ‘Propionibacterium acnes’ then takes advantage and causes inflammation leading to the large zits and pimples that can ruin your life.

Hormonal causes of acne.

Hormone fluctuation and activity, like menstrual cycles and puberty, may  result in acne. During puberty, increased production of male sex hormones called ‘androgens’ cause the follicular glands to grow larger and to make more sebum.
The use of anabolic steroids can also have an acne effect, and several hormones have been linked to acne: Testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS). Also,IGF-1 ‘insulin-like growth factor 1′ can cause acne.

Diet.

A high glycemic diet can result in worsening acne. Furthermore there is an association between the consumption of milk and the rate and severity of acne.

HOW I GOT RID OF MY ACNE:

I hope you have enjoyed the article so far. To finish, I will like to share how I got rid of my own acne. I suffered from mild to moderate acne for many years and tried many different over the counter products for acne without much success. I would get especially bad acne when perspirating a lot in hot weather.

However, after much trial and error, what worked for me personally in my fight to get rid of acne, was a combination of:

1) Benzoyl peroxide (Daily face washes with Oxy-10, which contains Benzoyl peroxide)

2) Tretinoin (Careful application of Tretinoin, Retin-A, or Tazarotene microsphere cream every second day)

3) Frequent facial washes with water or mild soap (Every time I washed my hands, I would wash my face too)

This is what worked for me.  For a more detailed description, see: HOW I GOT RID OF PIMPLES.
